If you visit Statsraaden Bar and Reception on Thursday, March 26, you can experience the Ocean Science Bar, which offers short and engaging insights into marine research, served in an informal and relaxed atmosphere right in the heart of the city. During One Ocean Week, you can experience the Ocean Science Bar every evening.
The Ocean Science Bar is a collaboration between Statsraad Lehmkuhl, the University of Bergen, the Institute of Marine Research, NORCE, and the Nansen Center. At Statsraaden Bar and Reception, you can learn about marine research and current ocean-related topics in an informal and relaxed atmosphere. And this Thursday in March, you’ll hear about how Arctic sea ice is disappearing rapidly, and how the northern seas are turning from white to blue. This is changing the climate, nature, and daily life for people living in and around the Arctic. On Thursday, March 26, 2026, the Ocean Science Bar invites you to an event explaining what is happening to the ice and what it means for the future.
Three researchers affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre will explain how climate projections and sea ice models can give us a better picture of developments in the Arctic. They will explain why sea ice remains important, even though we read that the Arctic may become ice-free in the summer in the future.
Sea ice acts as a reflective barrier that reflects sunlight and keeps the planet cool. When it melts, this effect disappears, which affects the global climate. In addition, the nature of the ice is changing. We are seeing more cracks, less continuous ice, and more vulnerable ice masses. These changes can have consequences for nature, wildlife, and people alike.
Program for the evening
- The Big Picture of Ice Retreat, by Lea Svendsen, Associate Professor at the Department of Geophysics, University of Bergen
- "Modeling Sea Ice in a New Arctic Reality," by Guillaume Boutin and Jonathan Rheinlænder, researchers at the Nansen Center for Environment and Remote Sensing
The event will take place on March 26 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Statsraaden Bar and Reception (Bradbenken 2). The event is free and open to everyone.
