In the depths of the fjord live creatures that are adapted to a rather special life. Down in the depths, many years can pass between water changes. Get the latest fjord research here!

At the bottom of Haugsværfjorden, at the innermost part of Masfjorden, the water can smell like rotten eggs. Further out in Masfjorden, conditions are not as bad, but oxygen levels are decreasing over time, as in other fjords along the coast.

In Masfjorden, the University of Bergen, NORCE, and the Institute of Marine Research have been taking samples of the water and marine life in the fjord for many years. In 2021, conditions were favorable off the coast, with new heavy water flowing into the fjord basins and all the way over the innermost fjord threshold in Haugsværfjorden.

The researchers' measuring instruments observed everything, like a gift package for the researchers who were investigating life in the oxygen-depleted environment.

Find out how the fjord works with us!
We present new research from the depths. How does climate change affect the fjord and the creatures that live there? Some species in the fjord may appreciate the changes – will they eventually take over? And who lived in the depths of the fjord long, long ago?
