This autumn, a program committee was set up consisting of representatives from the Institute of Marine Research and the University of Bergen, among others. The theme for 2026 is now ready.

The program committee is chaired by Jane Jünger, Senior Advisor for Green Regional Transition at the University of Bergen and consists of:

  • Matt Duke, CEO Grieg Maritime Group
  • Øyvind Fiksen, Professor of Biological Oceanography, UiB
  • Martha-Gurine Landeråen Hess, Commander/Head of the Naval Academy
  • Peter Haugan, Director, Institute of Marine Research
  • Haakon Steinar Vatle, director of the Statsraad Lehmkuhl sailing ship foundation, and expedition leader for One Ocean Expedition

A Safe and Predicted Ocean

The theme, "A Safe and Predicted Ocean", aligns with the goals of the UN Decade of Ocean Science, where the overall vision is "The Science We Need for the Ocean We Want."

This expresses the overarching goal of the decade: to bring together scientists, governments, business, civil society and the public to build a common knowledge base that enables sustainable management of the world's oceans by 2030.

The main theme of the One Ocean Summit is intended as a common thread throughout One Ocean Week, and as inspiration for other events. The purpose is to make the theme of One Ocean Week recognizable to the rest of the world.

The seven goals of the UN Decade of Ocean Science

This year's theme also ties in with the seven sub-goals of the Year of Ocean Science, which are designed to create an engaging and inspiring ocean that society understands, values and cares for.

1. A Clean Ocean
Where sources of pollution are identified, reduced and removed.

2. A Healthy and Resilient Ocean
Where marine ecosystems are mapped, protected, restored and managed sustainably.

3. A Productive Ocean
Ensuring a sustainable supply of food, energy and other resources.

4. A Predicted Ocean
Where societies understand and can respond to ocean conditions, weather and climate change.

5. A Safe Ocean
Where life and property are protected from ocean-related hazards.

6. An Accessible Ocean
Where data, information, technology and innovation are open and accessible to all.

7. An Inspiring and Engaging Ocean
Where society understands and values the ocean in relation to human well-being and sustainable development.
