The city fjord in Bergen is a part of the ocean – and our shared responsibility. That is why we are working to achieve a cleaner and richer fjord, in the middle of a busy city and an active port. The seabed in the city fjord has been heavily polluted for many years, including by heavy metals from former industry. That is why Puddefjorden got a new seabed in 2018, and in 2024 we also laid a new seabed in Store Lungegårdsvannet to prevent old toxic pollutants from being stirred up and spreading further.
But how do we know that this works? Does the new seabed keep the environmental toxins in place? Will new pollution arrive? And what does this mean for the work that is now underway in Vågen?
At Family Day on Festningskaien, the City Environment Agency, Bergen Vann, COWI, and the State Administrator in Vestland will demonstrate how we monitor, clean up, and care for the seabed of Byfjorden—and invite the whole family to participate in contests and win prizes
