Vågen, - Bergen's local ocean is a busy modern port, with fascinating stories hidden below the seabed from both centuries of maritime history and modern pollution.

Archaeological investigations and the Cleaner Harbor (Renere Havn) project are uncovering hidden layers of rich maritime heritage while laying the groundwork for a cleaner and healthier marine environment.

Vågen is our very central and local body of water here in Bergen. Today, it is a busy, modern port, but its most fascinating stories lie hidden beneath the seabed.

The harbor sediments preserve evidence of trade, shipping, and everyday life spanning hundreds of years, while also containing pollutants from more recent times.

Through the "Renere Havn" (Cleaner Harbor) project and ongoing archaeological excavations, scientists and heritage managers are uncovering these layers to ensure both a healthier marine environment and the protection of irreplaceable cultural heritage.

At this event, we will share information about both Vågen's history and today's efforts to restore marine life.

Results from recent archaeological investigations will be presented, revealing Bergen’s hidden maritime heritage before seabed remediation begins.

The event is free and open to everyone.
