International trade made Bergen an important city in the Middle Ages. Goods from Norway were transported to European markets from here. European goods came to Norway via Bergen.

"King Olav Kyrre founded the trading post of Bergen, and many wealthy people moved to the city, attracting merchants from other countries."

The Saga of Olav Kyrre

The Bryggen Museum houses the earliest traces of trade in Bergen. The exhibition features the remains of a large merchant ship that was built near Bergen at the end of the 12th century. Here you can see goods that came to the city from abroad throughout the Middle Ages. A runic inscription reads: "Rome, the capital of the world. I was there yesterday."

During One Ocean Week, we offer lessons to schools in Bergen, focusing on how shipping has influenced the city. We conclude with a small research project for the students, in which they try to find out where various commodities came from.

The teaching program is primarily designed for grades 5-7, but other grades may also be relevant.

We welcome school classes throughout the week between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
