How can we develop cities and communities that take better care of life underwater? And what does this mean for us who plan, build, and manage today's and tomorrow's port and coastal cities?

On April 24, professionals from across the country will gather at Grieghallen in Bergen when the Norwegian Landscape Architects Association (NLA) hosts the professional conference VANNVITTIG (Edge of Water) – a day dedicated to climate change, nature restoration, and life in and along the waterfront.

Climate change, marine heat waves, pollution, and extensive coastal development are affecting seafronts and riverbanks at a pace we have never seen before. This conference highlights the challenges—but also the opportunities—at the interface between land and water. The goal is to generate new knowledge, raise awareness, and inspire solutions that strengthen nature, urban life, and community safety.

The seminar will address topics such as:

Climate and adaptation
– Effects of climate change on coastal and port cities
– Marine heatwaves and consequences for ecosystems

Nature restoration
– Examples of successful “blue” restoration
– Knowledge about marine habitats and underwater life
– Presentation of Møllendal River Park

Waterfront and land reclamation
– Safe waterfronts in development projects
– Impact assessments and marine life in planning matters
– Panel discussion on land reclamation in the sea

Who is the professional development day suitable for?

VANNVITTIG is relevant for anyone working with development, planning, or management in and around the waterfront:

  • Landscape architects – who need knowledge about ecosystem services and responsibilities in waterfront projects
  • Project managers – who want to learn practical approaches to nature restoration
  • Planners and case officers – who face demands for assessments of marine life
  • Developers – who want insight into how buildings and construction affect the aquatic environment
  • Politicians – who influence land use, climate, and environmental policy
  • Anyone else with an interest in climate, nature, and sustainable social development

This is not just a day for landscape architects – but a meeting place for anyone who wants to make a difference at the intersection of urban development and nature conservation.

What can you expect to learn?

– How do we deal with the biodiversity crisis underwater?
– Which marine habitats should we prioritize – and how?
– How do we ensure accessible and safe waterfronts?
– What are the actual requirements for filling in the sea?
– How can I contribute to the restoration of marine life?

You return home with new knowledge, a new network, and a clear reminder of the responsibility we all have to shape robust, blue-green environments in the face of a warmer, wilder, and wetter climate.
