As long as people have used boats, boathouses have been needed as shelter from wind and weather. For fishermen, boathouses were just as important as barns, but today things are different. There are many indications that Norwegian boathouses, as cultural and historical landmarks, are in danger of disappearing, and at a rapid pace.
Eva Røyrane (born 1956) grew up in Ølve in Kvinnherad. As a journalist for Bergens Tidende from 1987 to 2013, she has written extensively about rural life, architecture, and building conservation. She has also worked at NRK's regional office in Sogn og Fjordane and is currently employed at the University of Bergen. Røyrane has published a number of books on Norwegian building traditions, including the bestsellersNorges låver(Norway's Barns) andAv stein(Of Stone).
