The ocean is one of our most important sources of food, yet it is overlooked in overall emergency preparedness. What will it take for fisheries, marine research, and healthy ecosystems to be given as natural a place in emergency preparedness as grain?

The ocean is one of the world’s most important sources of food, yet it has been overlooked in the announcement of the Year of Total Preparedness! The ocean is vulnerable to climate change, ecosystem pressures, and increased exploitation. The International Year of Ocean Science highlights the need for knowledge, innovation, and sustainable solutions that can ensure the ocean continues to provide the world with safe, stable, and nutritious food. Healthy oceans are not just an environmental goal; they are a prerequisite for global food security. Without robust marine ecosystems, modern ocean management, and research, future food systems will be less resilient in the face of climate change, conflicts, and global crises.

On stage, you will meet the following people, who will give presentations and/or participate in a discussion:

  • Christian Jørgensen, University of Bergen
  • Bente Torstensen, Nofima
  • Sverre Johansen, Fishermen's Association
  • Thomas Nyløkken, municipality
  • Amund Maage, Institute of Marine Research
  • Johanna Marcussen, National Committee for the International Year of Marine Science, HI, and UiA
  • Mette Mila, Research Council of Norway’s Marine Secretariat

Join us as the National Committee for the Year of Marine Research discusses what it will take to ensure that fisheries, marine research, and healthy ecosystems are given just as much priority in emergency preparedness as grain.
