The D/S “Stavenes” is the oldest preserved passenger steamship on the Norwegian coast and the only coal-fired steamship in Western Norway, protected by the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage. The ship was delivered in 1904 from Bergen Mekaniske Værksted as a local ferry to Nordre Bergenhus Amts Dampskibe, later Fylkesbaatane in Sogn og Fjordane. It was Christian Mikkelsen, as director of the company, who commissioned the ship. “Stavenes” operated for 68 years on routes to and from Bergen, locally in Sogn og Fjordane, and extensively in tourist service on the Nærøyfjord. In 1973, the “Stavenes” was sold to England; in 1991, it was brought home by the Stavenes Veteran Ship Association, and an extensive and costly restoration was undertaken with tens of thousands of volunteer hours. In 2016, the “Stavenes” undertook a technical test run for the first time in 62 years powered by its own steam engine. Due to a shortage of funds, the project is not yet complete, though it is nearing completion. Visitors will be able to see what has been achieved so far.
Free admission – all ages welcome on board.
