Vågen, - Bergen's local ocean is a busy modern port, with fascinating stories hidden below the seabed from both centuries of maritime history and modern pollution.

Archaeological investigations and the Cleaner Harbour (Renere Havn) project uncover hidden layers of rich maritime heritage while preparing for a cleaner and healthier marine environment.

Vågen is our very central and local ocean here in Bergen. It is a busy modern port today, but its most fascinating stories lie hidden below the seabed.

The harbour sediments preserve evidence of trade, shipping and everyday life through hundreds of years, while also containing pollutants from more recent times.

Through the Renere Havn (Cleaner harbour) project and ongoing archaeological excavations, scientists and heritage managers are uncovering these layers to ensure both a healthier marine environment and the protection of irreplaceable cultural heritage.

In this event, we will share knowledge on both Vågens history and todays efforts to restore marine life.

Results from recent Archaeological investigations will be presented and reveals Bergen’s hidden maritime heritage before seabed remediation begins.

The event is free and open for all.
