A panel discussion on coastal innovation, conservation, and the decisions that shape our coastline.
Bergen is one of fourteen cities in PRO-COAST, a Horizon Europe research project in which the University of Bergen is a partner, studying how coastal communities navigate decisions about biodiversity and development. Researchers and local stakeholders come together for a 45 minute panel at Litteraturhuset that surfaces the dilemma – not to resolve it, but to think through it together.
Panelists:
Thomas Remme is a local councillor for Miljøpartiet De Grønne on Askøy and one of the founding members of MDG Askøy, established in 2011. With a background spanning maritime industries, health and care, and voluntary organisations, he has been a consistent voice for nature protection within local democratic processes. Thomas joins the panel representing the community voice and democratic process, navigating environmental principles within local politics, and what decisions look like from the inside.
Jakob Grandin heads the Climate and Risk Section at the City of Bergen, where he leads strategic work on climate mitigation, circularity and adaptation. With a research background in sustainability governance and years of experience in interdisciplinary education, he brings a systems-thinking perspective to how institutions can navigate cascading environmental risks without defaulting to shallow quick fixes. Jakob joins the panel representing the governance and adaptation lens: what does responsible coastal development look like?
Tom-Stian Karlsen is a journalist at Askøyværingen, covering local community, politics and business with a particular interest in how larger societal shifts land at the local level. He has reported on land use, aquaculture and coastal development on Askøy, including the Kildn harbour project, and is interested in what the public record does and does not capture about decisions that shape a coastline. Tom-Stian joins the panel representing the public record: what has this story looked like from the outside, and what questions remain unanswered?
